Ever wished you had someone who could show you the ropes in your career? Mentorship is one of the best ways to get that, but you may think finding a mentor is nearly impossible. Turns out though, about 70% of Fortune 500 companies have actual mentorship programs, and so finding one could be as simple as checking out your Human Resources department, says the Globe & Mail. But before taking up someone’s time, figure out specifically what you want learn from them.
Once you have a good understanding of that seek out a mentor who can help you in those particular areas. And remember, you’ll have a better relationship if you can also offer up some skills. Maybe you know something about social marketing for example. Or you have a handle on web design. Finally, don’t forget a little flattery – telling your potential mentor how much you respect them, will only make them feel good about helping you.
